Brett: This one beckons to me. "Come Brett, come
and stay with me. Sleep in my comfy beds and relax in my retro coolness and
musty AC." Yep, I like this one a lot. There is not just one arrow -
no. There's two commanding for you to turn right and see about a room for
the night even though you only live three blocks away.
Larry: It's simple but huge. I mean, it towers above everything else
on the block. It does have something that many other Motel signs envy.
Motion! The upper "Vacancy" signs spins like a radar dish.
Brett: OK, right! You can see this in the picture. You managed to capture the spinning vacancy with a 3/4
perspective that isn't really quite 3/4. It just off enough to cause your
brain to finish the spin. The vanishing perspective of the upper portion is
also very nice, particularly as its contrasted with the sterile
motionlessness of the lower portion. There's also a nice bit of confusion
for the view in that the giant lit block of "Greenlake Motel" is hard to
separate from the tower. Are they two different signs or part of one larger
whole? An interesting dichotomy.
Larry: Actually the "Greenlake Motel" portion is about 10
yards closer to us than the other part. I had to stand back just to get them
in the same shot. It's like it changed ownership at some point and they
renamed it. Maybe it was without a name before.
Brett: So, this gets more interesting. Here you have absolutely no
atmospheric perspective and I just notice that you have two crossing
diminishing perspectives. So the photo at first appears completely flat
until you see the wee details involved. I think you're right about it
probably not having a name in its early days. It was probably built at a
time when things didn't have names. It was probably called the motel down by
the lake or something like that. |
